A must or a possibility?
The scale Options – Procedures is the last in the set of metaprograms which I hope you practice carefully. Perhaps you are happy about that as I know writing sentences to exercise particular filters may tire you.
Moreover, you may think that the recognition of all programs is difficult and takes a lot of time. You may be right and that’s why you shouldn’t try to determine the position on every scale. The knowledge of particular programs is necessary to be able to adjust to the one which occur in its extreme position.
Also when you prepare a presentation for a broad group of people you should take into account all kinds of ways in which people processes information. Let’s return to the options and procedures...
When people are directed toward options they are trying to find in every situation as many possibilities of action as they can. They take the action when they have a lot of choices and they act just because they can.
On the other hand, people who have the metaprograms procedures, take the action only if they are convinced that this should be done in accordance with recommendations and instructions. They usually do something because they think they ‘have to’. If you ask a person with option programme why he did it, he will answer:
- There appeared the opportunity so I made an action.
When you pose the same question to the ‘procedure’ person, he will tell you:
- It had to be done, I had no choice, and I had to.
If we want to convince a person directed toward 'options', we should show him many possibilities of choice (even a seeming choice). We can say: you can buy the A, B or C version, there are a lot of possibilities.
On the other hand if we communicate with a person having the 'procedures' program, we ought to underline the fact that in this situation he has to behave in this way. Also we can show him the detailed procedure.
People with 'procedure' program like the order and they usually want others to guide them. This kind of person will surely remind you that your omitted some issue in your presentation.
Keep in mind that it is only the approximate model of the one that people use to filter information. It is so simple so that you could use it efficiently and easily. Don’t worry if it doesn’t work at the beginning or when it turns out that someone is using a different metaprogram in every situation. At that time make use of something completely different.
